Rey Pila takes over CDMX

Mexico City locals Rey Pila took over CDMX’s Zocalo last weekend (pictured) in the latest stop on a tour that sees them playing Mexico City’s Auditorio BB 25 January, Foro Tims in Monterrey on 8 February, and Cuerda Cultura in Guadalajara on 28 February. Check for tickets here.

The shows are in support of their fourth studio record, Estan Strange 1, released in November last year via Arts & Crafts Mexico. Formed in 2010, the band - comprised of Diego Solórzano, Andrés Velasco, and Rodrigo Blanco - has honed a distinctive blend of dark synth-pop and dance rock, drawing influence from iconic acts like The Cars, Depeche Mode, Aphex Twin, and Boards of Canada. But the new album takes these influences and mixes them up with everything from witch house and French electro to UK rave.

Fresh off their triumphant Zocalo gig, we caught up with the band for a tour through some of their favourite Mexico City hangouts.

Venue

Blanco says: “316 is a tiny local venue with an amazing program. I’ve discover really cool new acts there like Americojones Experience and Diles que no Me Maten.” Instagram.

Bar

“Union VeriBari has the best vibe. It goes from a quiet mezcaleria to a full on dance floor. They like to keep their location hidden. But those who follow the call will find it.” Instagram.
